Adam Film Quarterly vs. Adam Film World: What a Difference Two Decades Make

Adam Film Quarterly vs. Adam Film World: What a Difference Two Decades Make

In 1966 a new magazine launched: it was called Adult Film Quarterly, was published by Bill Rotsler as a complement to Knight Publishing’s Adam magazine, and it provided regular adult film industry commentary for the first time. The first issue’s cover price was $1 and the cover story was about The Notorious Daughter of Fanny Hill.

The name Adult Film Quarterly reflected its intended release schedule and over the next three years, seven issues were published. The magazine’s early years covered a combination of mainstream and sexploitation films. Features on notable names like Dean Martin, Ingmar Bergman, Marcel Marceau and Kim Novak were interspersed with profiles of early sex films such as For Single Swingers Only, Therese and Isabelle and House of Pain and Pleasure. The magazines were full of detail and could run to 100 pages or more.

By 1988, the magazine had changed its name from Adam Film Quarterly to Adam Film World. It was now published on a more frequent basis and had shed any mainstream elements to focus exclusively on the world of hardcore adult movies. The magazine was still a Knight Publishing offering but founder Bill Rostler’s involvement lessened as he turned his fuller attention to the world of literary science fiction. With all pages now in color and the magazine notably slimmer, each issue contained a large volume of film reviews mixed with profiles of contemporary industry starlets like Traci Lords, Shanna McCullough and Christy Canyon.

The Rialto Report has digitized all the issues of Adult Film Quarterly – as well as all issues from 1988 to illustrate the change that occurred in the adult film industry in just two decades.

Looking at those 80’s issues I forgot how hot Alicia Monet was. I also forgot that Kascha and Angela Baron were the two most over rated porn stars of the 80’s. Kascha only performed with her steroid husband and all the scenes were the same and Angela Baron looked like having sex on camera was the last thing she wanted to do that day.

Thanks for the uploads. These periodicals certainly are reflective of their times
The late 1960s publications had more of an artistic quality to them as opposed to the 1980s which is geared mostly toward ads selling video tapes and the presentations are very cookie cutter porn.
One thing to think about. Those sultry, sensual ladies shown in those 1960s issues are pushing 80 years old 🙂
