Regular listeners will know that over the last few years, I’ve spoken to many female adult film actors who were active from the 1960s through to the late 1980s, and, as interesting as their experiences were, it also made me intrigued to find out what it was like to be a male in the business during the same time.
So a few months ago, I contacted actor/director/agent and X-rated film producer, Bud Lee, to hear about his life – which I was curious to hear about, not only because of his career, but also due to his marriages to two of the biggest stars of the 1980s and 90s, Hyapatia Lee and Asia Carrera.
In the first part of my conversation with Bud, he spoke about how he got into the industry with Hyapatia and the struggles they encountered being a couple in the business. This episode picks up in the late 1980s, when their relationship broke down just while Bud’s career making films for companies such as Vivid, Playboy, and Adam and Eve, was taking off. And Bud is still working today – filming scenes and being an agent – and he reflects on the significant changes that he’s seen in the industry, as well as the people involved.

I am troubled by the revelation towards the end where Bud admits to his concern about the modern day direction of the XXX industry, but a business that he still works in. Having said that, I applaud him for speaking his truth when so few have.

Thanks for part 2. I watched an interview for a DVD extra of one of Asia’s movies. One of the actresses was two hours late. You can see the frustration in Bud’s eye. Imagine, he probably had to deal with that all of the time. It’s amazing that anything was completed in adult films, because so many of the people working in them were complete flakes. Take some time off and take care of yourself Bud. OF is toxic.
Too bad you all didn’t have the actual Phil Donahue video or even a link pointing to it somewhere else. I would have loved to see that.

Thank you, Ms Hall! Now I like Bud Lee more than I ever had before. I was a bit surprised first seeing him in The Young Like it Hot, as if he was a foley character, and a good one, to the other characters, for contrast. Then I saw the marvellous Canterbury. I know he got a lot of help directing and put it together, but it really propelled him to be a good movie maker.
Wonderful episode. I long for more of the best produced and most interesting podcast there is.
