We’re on vacation this week, but wanted to wish everyone a very happy Christmas from ourselves – and from two of our favorites… Johnnie Keyes and C.J. Laing (see below).

CJ Laing, Johnny Keyes

We also wanted to close the year by telling you about ‘Supporting Characters‘, a podcast – where Ashley West from The Rialto Report was the interviewee this week.

‘Supporting Characters’ host Bill Ackerman talks to writers, bloggers, podcasters, fanzine publishers, programmers, preservationists and more about their creative endeavors and today’s film culture.

This week, Bill spoke to Ashley, who explains how his ongoing documentary project detailing the birth of the adult film industry in New York put him on the path to recording audio commentaries with figures like Radley Metzger, consulting on the HBO series ‘The Deuce‘ and co-founding The Rialto Report, a collection of podcasts, articles and photographs chronicling the history of the golden age of adult film. Other topics covered include: fanzines, the field recordings of Alan Lomax, the adult film work of Wes Craven, Boogie Nights, the Golden Age Appreciation Fund, Video Nasties, Jamie Gillis, ‘Barbara Broadcast‘ and how an eBay bidding war can lead you to a ‘Purple Rose Of Cairo’ moment.

You can listen to the podcast here.

See you all in 2018!

I look forward to discovering a new podcast – especially if it features the Rialto team.

What’s on the slate for next year?!!!!

Happy Holidays to all! It’s amazing how classic porn has become such a big part of the pop culture lexicon. I grew up (and still live) in NYC, and I have some amazing memories of old school Times Square. This website is a valuable tool in preserving the legacy of what is sadly (like pro wrestling) considered a fringe show business element. Hope to see even more great stuff in 2018!

Back in the 1970s/1980s of my youth (a long time ago and a galaxy far far away), I had a family member involved in the Betamax distribution of the golden age xxx era films. Suffice to say I grew up watching stars like Jaime Gillis, Joey Silvera, Eric Edwards, Samantha Fox, Desiree Cousteu, Sharon Mitchell. Also growing up in New York City, I was fortunate to experience the tail end of the 42nd Street Golden Age.

Your work on this site is beyond awesome. You present these golden age stars as more then sex objects on film. You present them as human beings with a life story. Your work illustrates their genius, vulnerabilities, insight, flaws as well as uniqueness. Aren’t these characteristics that make us all human?

Happy and healthy New Year to you all!! And thanks again for making this the #1 site on the net.

I leave you with a quote:

It´s quite hard for me to know what makes me drool more intensely: watching my fave stars from the Golden Age of X-Rated films perform OR looking this Virtual Film Shrine up for new podcasts every few days.

    Ashley and April, you rule.

Listening to the Supporting Characters podcast was almost as much fun as listening to one of yours.

Was fascinated by Bill’s impressions of the Fred Lincoln podcast (one of the few I felt like taking a shower after) and Ashley’s opinion of adult films at large. It’s true, though…unless there’s some behind the scenes aspects of a particular film, it’s not about the movies themselves, but the people behind them.

For telling their stories, we are forever grateful.

Wishing you and yours a very happy holiday and a great 2018.

Your instincts were wrong, Mr West….I very much enjoyed this interview and the process of how The Rialto Report came to be, interesting to say the least. Really looking forward to what’s next in 2018!

I don’t bother much with cultural websites anymore– too much noise to signal, too many agendas. The Rialto Report is my exception. I always want to know what you’ve posted each Sunday. Your real history, quality, dedication and basic humanity always shine. What’s the word? Oh yeah: sincerity.

I look forward to hearing the interview.

Ashley, I just heard the Supporting Characters podcast. You came across as very articulate and well-versed, which we already knew, in spite of you insisting you stay in the background. Great work, great interview and great insight into why Rialto Report came to exist and why it’s important.

Keep up the great work, and happy new year.

    Best, Roger
